At MCR Repairs, we provide professional French polishing services in Manchester and across the North West, restoring everything from antique furniture to modern wooden pieces and architectural woodwork.
Damaged, dull, or scratched wooden furniture doesn’t always need replacing. In many cases, it just needs the right restoration method, like French polishing, to bring it back to life.

French Polish Repair Services We Offer

Not every piece needs full restoration. In many cases, targeted French polish repair is enough to restore the original finish without stripping the entire surface.
We commonly repair:
- Water rings and heat marks
- Scratches and scuffs
- Sun fading and dull patches
- Localised finish damage
- Small dents and surface wear
- Veneer imperfections
The good thing about a French polish repair is that it allows us to blend repairs into the surrounding finish, meaning damaged areas can often be restored without any visible trace.
This makes it one of the most effective methods for wood furniture restoration when the damage is isolated.

Types of French Polish Furniture Restoration Services We Offer

French Polish Repair vs Full Restoration
Understanding the difference helps avoid unnecessary cost.
French Polish Repair
Best for localised damage such as scratches, stains, or small surface marks. The surrounding finish is preserved and blended.
Full Restoration
Required when the original finish is heavily worn, damaged, or inconsistent across the entire piece.
We always assess first and recommend the most cost-effective option. In many cases, a full restoration is not needed.
Our Process
Every job we take on follows a careful approach. We don't take any shortcuts in French polishing.
- Assessment: We look at the piece, understand its history, and assess the condition of the existing finish. Full restoration, targeted repair, or somewhere in between. We tell you straight.
- Stripping and preparation: Where a full restoration is needed, we carefully strip the existing finish, sand the surface back to clean wood, and prepare the grain to receive the shellac evenly. This stage determines the quality of everything that follows.
- Grain filling: Open-grained woods need the grain filled before polishing begins. This gives the final surface its smoothness and clarity.
- Building the finish: Shellac is applied in multiple thin layers using a pad, building depth gradually. Each layer needs to be worked at the right consistency, in the right pattern, and at the right pressure. It takes skill and time to do it properly.
- Burnishing and finishing: The final layers are burnished to the desired level of sheen, from a soft satin glow to a deep, mirror-like gloss. You choose the finish you want.
- Quality check: We don't sign off until the result is right. And if anything isn't perfect, we fix it before we leave.
