What is etching, and can it be removed?
Etching is surface damage caused by acid reacting with the stone. It shows up as dull, pale, or cloudy patches, often in rings, splash marks, or irregular areas that have lost their shine.
The common causes are wine, fruit juice, vinegar, fizzy drinks, limescale removers and standard household cleaning products used on stone that cannot take them.
Etching is not a stain. A stain changes the colour of the stone, while etching damages the finish itself, which is why no amount of cleaning will lift it. Marble, limestone and travertine are the most vulnerable because they are calcium-based and react readily with acid.
Light and moderate etching is usually removed during honing and polishing. Deeper etch marks may need a small amount of surface correction first. Either way, the repair works on the stone rather than coating over it.

Marble is a beautiful material, but it's also soft and porous compared to many other stones, which means it scratches, etches and dulls more easily than granite or slate.
Our marble floor polishing service removes light scratches and restores an even shine across the whole floor. It also brings back the depth and clarity that makes marble so distinctive in the first place. Where the damage is more than surface deep, we can also address deeper marks before polishing, so the finished floor is consistent from edge to edge.

Stone floor polishing

- Slate has a natural texture that needs a different polishing approach to keep its character while improving its finish.
- Terrazzo, being a composite of stone chips set in resin or cement, responds well to polishing and can usually be brought back to a near-mirror finish.
The wrong method or products can further dull a stone or permanently damage its surface, which is why this isn't a job for generic cleaning products or DIY kits.
Location matters too. A hallway or entrance sees far more grit and foot traffic than a bedroom, and a commercial reception area sees more still. The 3 layers of a floor polishing service: Honing, polishing and protective finishing
Floor polishing isn't a single step, and understanding the difference helps set the right expectations.
- Honing uses progressively finer abrasives to smooth out scratches, etch marks and lippage, where tiles sit slightly uneven with each other. Honing removes the damage and levels the surface but leaves a soft, matte or satin finish rather than a high shine. It's a good choice for busy areas, since a honed finish is naturally more slip-resistant than a glossy one.
- Polishing takes a honed or lightly worn floor and works it with much finer diamond abrasives, bringing out a higher shine and the natural depth of colour in the stone. For floors in reasonably good condition, polishing on its own is usually enough to restore the shine without any need for grinding or honing first.
- Protective finishing, usually a penetrating sealer, is applied once the polishing work is complete. This helps protect porous stone like marble and limestone from staining and everyday wear, so the new finish lasts longer.

A little care after polishing goes a long way towards keeping the finish looking good.
- Use a pH-neutral cleaner designed for stone floors, not general household cleaning products, which can be too acidic or abrasive.
- Wipe up spills promptly, particularly acidic liquids like wine, fruit juice or vinegar, which can etch some stone types.
- Use doormats at entrances to reduce the amount of grit tracked onto the floor, since grit is one of the main causes of scratching.
- Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the surface. Use felt pads under legs where possible.
- Reseal porous stone like marble and limestone periodically, as advised for your specific floor, to keep the protective finish working.
