Why wood veneer?
Veneer offers real advantages over solid wood, which is one reason it remains so widely used. It allows manufacturers to use a small amount of high-quality, sometimes expensive timber, such as walnut or oak, over a more affordable base. This keeps costs down without sacrificing the appearance of natural wood grain.
Veneer also allows matching grain patterns across large surfaces, such as a dining table or a run of fitted wardrobes, in a way that's harder to achieve with solid timber. Because the base layer is engineered board rather than solid wood.
Veneered furniture is also less prone to warping, cracking or expanding with changes in humidity.
In terms of sustainability, a single tree can produce far more usable surface area as veneer than as solid board, since veneer sheets are cut so thin. This makes better use of a limited natural resource.
None of this means veneer is a lesser material. It simply behaves differently to solid wood, which is exactly why veneer damage calls for its own repair approach rather than a generic wood fix.

Veneer repairs vs solid wood repairs
Veneer is a thin layer of real wood, bonded to a solid base such as chipboard or MDF. Solid wood furniture and fittings are timber all the way through.
Veneer damage usually affects only the top layer. A skilled repair can restore it without touching the base material underneath.
Solid wood can be sanded and refinished more heavily, since there's more material to work with.
Veneer needs a lighter, more careful touch, since sanding through the thin top layer would expose the base beneath.
Grain and colour matching is harder on veneer too. The pattern needs to line up with the surrounding surface, not just the shade. On a rotary-cut veneer, that means following a sweeping, irregular pattern. On a sliced veneer, it means keeping a straighter grain line running true across the repair.
